Maureen is a shy 53 year old woman with Down Syndrome who lived with her mother her whole life. Everything changed when her mother passed away.
Maureen could not live alone. With no plan in place and no relatives to care for her, Maureen’s welfare was decided by the local social service agency. She ended up living in a Seniors’ home in the dementia ward with no one close to her age to talk to, and very little social stimulation. Maureen’s days were spent alone in her room for over 2 years.
The local L’Arche community heard of Maureen’s situation and welcomed her warmly into their home. This changed Maureen’s life forever.
Supported by her new family - core members and assistants - Maureen found her voice, and began to speak up, reach out and make her needs known. She was helped by attending L’Arche programs that built her self-esteem, gave her life structure and routine. Maureen gained the courage to go out into her local community and look for a job. She applied to become a cleaner at the local coffee shop and got the job.
We want to welcome even more people like Maureen, people who should not be discarded due to their disability.
It is not enough to simply move someone into a L’Arche home. We need to provide them with programs that help them reach their potential - programs that are not government funded. These socialization and work programs can drastically change the quality of life of an individual! Your gift will allow Maureen and others like her to live life to the fullest.
Over the winter, please help us reach more men and women like Maureen, who may fall through the cracks and become isolated.
Thank you for your generosity!
