Support people like Robert this Christmas season!
Imagine being sent away to live in an institution when youíre just seven years old.
Thatís what happened to Robert. When he was just a child, the doctors convinced his parents the best option for their son was to put him in an institution for the rest of his life.
In the institution, Robert, who was born with an intellectual disability, became very isolated. He was never taught social skills or even basic hygiene skills, like shaving.
Robert tells of how the men in the institution would be lined up and one orderly would apply shaving cream, while the next would go down the line shaving them. If discipline was required for disobedience it was applied by fire hose to their bare backs. I shudder when I think about it.
Itís no wonder Robert refers to the institution as a ďvery bad placeĒ.
Then, after nearly 30 years of being institutionalized, Robertís family found LíArche. For the first time since he was a small child, Robert had a home filled with love and acceptance. He was given a chance for a happier, more fulfilling life, thanks to caring donors like you.
The holiday season is the perfect time to express my gratitude on behalf of individuals like Robert. Your support for LíArche and people with intellectual disabilities tells me that the true spirit of Christmas is alive and well in your heart.
Today, during this season of giving, I hope youíll find it in your heart to be generous. Your gift will enable Robert and many others like him.
With the guidance of LíArche assistants, Robert learned how to shave himself. He even learned how to play the piano. And, just as importantly, he learned social skills which empowered him to come out of his shell. He now loves to make new friends.
With your help, Robert could finally put those years of isolation and anger behind him.
Robert isnít the only person who has benefitted. Iím always hearing stories like this Ė of lives transformed and enriched Ė because you have it in your heart to give.
We need you by our side to open more spaces in LíArche homes for adults like Robert. They deserve more than a place to just exist. They deserve the opportunity to thrive.
You see, government funding provides for the basics of life for people with intellectual disabilities Ė food, shelter. But thatís not nearly enough. The quality of life, additional skills training and companionship that makes LíArche unique is not funded by the government.
We depend on the generosity of thoughtful people like you to transform lives.
Your support this Christmas season will help ensure individuals like Robert have access to everything they need, beyond the basics, to reach their full potential.
The type of day program that transformed Robertís life and will transform many other lives costs $15,000 a year. That translates to $62 per day, $313 a week or $1,250 per month. Will you make a generous gift today to keep our vital Day Programs running for a day, a week, or a month?
Living in a loving LíArche community has done wonders for Robert. The once-angry man now loves to go out in public and talk about LíArche. At his presentations with our Outreach Team, he tells his audiences the importance of accepting those who seem different. He speaks of inclusion, love, and what it means to care for others.
Please send your thoughtful gift today and together we will reach more men and women like Robert who deserve to be included and loved this Christmas and every day.
May the blessings of the Christmas season be with you,
President and CEO
